Latin Name: Panax Ginseng
Introduction:
Panax Ginseng is indigenous to China. It is cultivated in China, Korea, Japan and Russia. The plant is a perennial, and stands erect from 30 to 80 cm high. It has a smooth, round stem and bears terminal whorls of 3 to 5 palmate leaves. The leaflets are thin, finely serrate, gradually acuminate, 7 to 20 cm long and 2 to 5 cm wide. The rhizome tapers at the ends and is often palmate at the tip, giving it a human-like form. The medicinal part is the dried root. Ginseng root consists of the dried main and lateral root and root hairs of Panax Ginseng. Pharmacology:
The pharmacological and clinical effects of Ginseng have been extensively studied over the past 20 years. Two effects which have been repeatedly identified by various research groups can be summarized as:
l Adaptogenic, ie. Enhancement of the body¡¯s non-specific resistance to external stresses or to noxious effects of physical, chemical or biological nature.
Improvement of physical and metal performance.
The immunostimulant action of ginseng extracts has been repeatedly confirmed in animal experiments. Various groups of workers have described in ***ail the enhancement of RNA and protein biosynthesis after administration of ginseng extracts.
Uses confirmed by Germen Commission E: as a tonic to combat feelings of lassitude and debility, lack of energy and ability to concentrate, and during convalescence.
