Latin Name: Epimedium brevicomum Maxim
Synonym: Horny Goat Weed
Epimedium is known as ¡°Yin-Yang-Huo¡± in China. Its name is derived from the name of animal, the yin-yang that according to tradition takes the drug to promote one hundred sexual climaxes every day.
Epimedium has a pungent flavor with warm properties. The dried aerial parts of the plant are used for herbal medicinals. It enters the body through the liver and kidney meridians. Epimedium in traditional Oriental uses: 1 ¡¤ Supplements kidneys and strengthens yang ¡¤ Dispels wind-damp ¡¤ Treats impotence ¡¤ Weakness in the loins and knees ¡¤ General paralysis
Epimedium has several important chemical constituents: 2 ¡¤ The leaf and stem contain icariin (icaritin rhamnoside-glucoside) ¡¤ Olivil and icariresinol
Recent chemical analysis shows that Epimedium contains at least nine flavonoids, and that the leaves are similar across all varieties of Epimedium, but rhizomes and roots differ in their chemical composition Epimedium has been shown to have these pharmacological effects: 5 ¡¤ Aphrodisiac¡ªIt stimulates the production of semen, causing a filling up of the scrotum and stimulating the sensing nerves. The leaf and the root appear to be most potent for this. ¡¤ Hypotensive¡ªThe extract lowers blood pressure of several animals. It acts by dilating the peripheral blood vessels and inhibiting the vasomotor center in the brain. ¡¤ It also can serve as an anti-tussive, expectorant and an anti-asthmatic.
In 1990, researchers (Chen et al) discovered that extracts of Epimedium might have mono-amine-oxidase-ihibitor activity. In trials, they showed that levels of noradrenaline, adrenaline, serotonin and dopamine levels were all elevated in animals given Epimedium. Higher levels of dopamine particularly, may help to explain the pro-sexual effect of Epimedium. High dopamine levels encourage the release of leutenizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. LH in turn stimulates the testes to produce more testosterone. |
