It belongs to polyporaceae (so called ¡°Monkey¡¯s Bench¡±) family and found everywhere in the world in fall and has been used in TCM for centuries. It is one of a large number of often-unrelated fungi referred to collectively as bracket fungi because they form bracketlike growths on trees and timber. The fruiting body is the only part that is immediately visible. The mass of hyphae, which form its mycelium, penetrates and feeds upon the dead wood on which the fungus is living. The spore-producing fruiting body is derived from the mycelium. In the Ming Dynasty it was considered important for improving one¡¯s spirit and vital energy and for strengthening tendons and bones. More recently clinical trials have proven it effective for cancer patients because of its anti-tumor action and ability to stimulate the immune system. Medicinal polysaccharides are found in the tough cell walls of both mushroom and mycelium. The raw mushroom is indigestible, but a hot water extraction process brings out the valuable substances.
Coriolus is the top-selling nutritional product in Japan today and the number one selling medicinal mushroom product in the world for cancer treatment (over $600 million annually in Japan, Europe and North America).
