Latin Name: Momordica charantia L.

Origin: China, India and U.S.A, etc.
Description: Momordica belongs to the cucumber family. It is a tender, tropical perennial grown as an annual. "Herbaceous, slender climber with slightly pubescent stems and leaves; petiole = blade; leaves to 10-12 cm long, palmately 5-7-lobed; the lobes ¡À sinuate-dentate; flowers yellow; peduncle with a reniform bracteole; corolla 1.5-2 cm long; fruit obovoid or oblong-cylindric, coarsely ridged and bumpy-tuberculate, to 20 cm, orange or dark yellow when ripe, splitting open to reveal the seeds, these black but covered with a soft, fleshy red aril, 12-16 mm long" (Stone, 1970). Constituents: The fruits contain Charantin, which is a mixture of b-Sitosterol-b-D-glucoside and 5, 25-Stigmastadien-3b-ol-b-D-glucoside. They also contain 5-hydroxy-typtamine, Alkaloids, Alpha-Elaeostearic-acid Ascorbigen, Citrulline, Cryptoxanthin, Elasterol, Flavochrome, Fluoride, Lanosterol, Lutein, Lycopene, Momordicin, Momordicoside-F-1, Momordicoside-F-2, Momordicoside-G, Momordicoside-I, Mutachrome, Oxalate, Oxalic-acid, Pipecolic-acid, Polypeptide-p, Rubixanthin, Sugars, Zeaxanthin, Zeinoxanthin and many kinds of amino acids, such as glutamic acid, lactamic acid, b-lactamic acid, phenylalanine, proline, a-aminobutyric acid, carbamyl ornithine, galacturonic acid and pectin.
